An Overview of the Role of Edible Insects in Preserving Biodiversity Gene
نویسنده
چکیده
In this discussion the principle is adopted that factors tending to increase food and/or income for economically marginal rural families, while decreasing pressure for land-clearing, pesticides and intensive agriculture, will tend to favor the preservation ofbiodiversity and a sustainable future. The great diversity ofhabitats of insect species that serve as traditional foods presents an almost endless diversity of situations in which recognition and enlightened management of the food insect resource can result not only in better human nutrition but simultaneously aid in maintaining diversity of habitats for other forms of life. Approaches include: 1) Enhancing forest conservation and management by acting on the desire of local populations for protection of traditional insect foods (i.e., caterpillars in Zambia and Zaire)l 2) Reducing poaching in parks and wildlife preserves by atlowing sustainable use of the food insect resources by the local people (i.e., caterpillars in Malawi); 3) Reducing pesticide use by developing more efficient methods of harvesting pest species that are traditional foods (i.e., grasshoppers); 4) Increasing environmental and economic efficiency by developing dual product systems (i.e., silks and silk moth larvae/pupae, honey and honey bee brood); 5) Reducing organic pollution by recycling agricultural and forestry wastes into high-quality food or animal feedstuffs (i.e., fly larvae, palm weevils). Other relevant considerations are that some edible insect species enhance their local environment in various ways (i.e., leafcutter ants in S. America) or create additional diversity of species within the habitat (i.e., termites in Africa). Some, as shown in studies with crickets exhibit considerably higher food conversion efficiency than beef cattle when fed diets of similar quality. Finally, there is need for research on industrial scale mass-prodution of edible insects, for increased recognition of the nutritional and environmental importance of insects by national governments, and for increased involvement of Western media and academia in dispelling unfounded cultural biases in the Western World toward insects as food.

An Overview on Edible Oils with Integrity Approach
The issue of the integrity of edible oils and fats can be considered in three main areas of safety, authenticity and quality in accordance with the standardization approach. Safety is the most essential part of the food, including edible oils, due to effects on health of consumers. Authenticity equivalent to purity is also an important aspect of this approach. The nature and prevention of fraud...

Introduction: Melatonin is a hormone secreted from the pineal gland and plays an important role in regulating the brain functions. This hormone with antioxidant activity supports the body against internal and external damaging factors. Melatonin reduces the production of free radicals by preserving mitochondrial homeostasis, and contributes to ATP synthesis in mitochondria. Reduction of melaton...

In an investigation of the effects of the effluent of fish farms on the water quality of the Marbor River in Isfahan province based on biological indicators, some cases of infection of macrobenthos with horsehair worms (Nematomorpha: Gordiidae) were observed. About 76% of the observed worms were observed to leave their hosts. the horsehair worms were identified in only three families of aquatic...
متن کاملProline accumulation and osmotic stress: an overview of P5CS gene in plants
Under osmotic stresses, proline accumulation is an important response of plants to these conditions. Proline is a compatible osmolyte which affects many cellular and molecular aspects of plant in both normal and stressful situations. Proline is shown to be involved in plant development in normal condition and in conferring resistance to plant under biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, many s...

Freshwater fish biodiversity is a precious natural asset in terms of economic, cultural and scientific interest. And yet, the inland freshwater ecosystem in Malaysia is declining at a far greater rate than terrestrial ecosystems in the tropics. What happened, and what is being done to address the crisis? This paper extracts findings from the latest literature and explores overarching issues per...
